This syllabus is
only a guideline for the course, I may make changes to it as the course
progresses.
Module 1: Video Laboratory
The objective of this module is for students to begin to create a framework
from which to better understand the various aspects of time-based media
in art and design and for students to become more consciously aware
of how the element of time can be used expressively in their work, all
in a dynamic, productive in-class collaborative laboratory like setting.
Skills: DV camera basics, editing in Imovie, integration of other media
in video medium
Concepts: collaborative work, narrative and time, laboratory learning
and production
Projects: footage reedit, title sequences, animation and video, Humdrum
lives video project
Read: Mary Stewart chapters "Aspects and Elements of Time",
"Narrative and Non-Narrative", "Interdisciplinary Art"
Look: in class video clips will be shown every week

Assgn: buy dv tape, bring dv tape and hard drive to class next week
Begin Humdrum lives by writing ideas, sketching shots, researching,
brainstorming, shooting test footage
Week three 2/6

Demo: Capturing and editing in Imovie
Assgn: read Mary Stewart, Aspects and Elements of Time
Continue work on video project: shooting more footage, capturing onto
your hard drive, experimenting with editing process, creating a thumbnail
storyboard

In class project: Redit footage
Demo: Importing photoshop images into Imovie
Assgn: read Mary Stewart Narrative and non-Narrative
Continue work on your independent video project, try to have a rough
edit of the majority of the footage completed by this week

Module 2: Independent projects in narrative forms
The objective of this module is for students to have a chance to work
independently and the projects and time are devoted to the student’s
progress towards a more sustained and independent inquiry into topics
of personal interest. Idea generating, research, scheduling, organization,
editing, and reworking and focusing ideas will be the focus on in class
conversation.
Skills: develop your skills in medium of your choice, deepen understanding
of time and narrative
Projects: images about a source, independent project based on narrative
concepts
Read: one individual reading to be assigned in meeting with me
Look: in class work in a variety of media will be shown every other
week
Week eight 3/27

Begin work on your independent five week project--create proposal for
