Humdrum lives
In this project you will make a video about a humdrum activity.
The following is a list of possible choices:
falling over spilling food
walking down stairs sleeping
burning toast losing your keys
drawing checking email
waiting at a red light paying for an apple
a leaf falling the sun setting
rush hour garbage pickup
ripping a piece of paper
In themselves these actions are very mundane. However you will use your color and compositional elements to develop this time based sequence into a compelling slice of everyday life.
Students will create an experimental video which explores one of the aspects or elements of time covered in the Mary Stewart reading and inclass presentations using video footage they have captured about an everyday activity
Your video will be under three minutes using the DVD cameras and IMovie. Submit 1 DVD of this movie to me.
Process:
1. choose your action
2. document the action in a sketch/storyboard
3. ruminate on the implications of the action (beauty, commonness, strangeness, etc.)
4. observe the color associated with the action and how it permutates in the scene-what is the significance of this color to the moment? write a list of no fewer than 20 associations/implications
5. shoot the action and associated scenes, shoot examples of the color closeup, far away, in different lights, etc.
6. edit
Consider the role of time and movement in your piece? What do these qualities convey--agistation, calm, energy, anger, love, meditation, boredom, excitement?
7. add extra sound tracks?, shoot more
8. re-edit
Consider the life of light in your piece? how does light animate the color? How does light animate the atmosphere, emotional resonance, etc.?
9. show rough cut
10. re-edit
Consider pace, duration, repetition, variation of footage and whole piece. Choice of type, fades and wipes, and sound will all be determined by the subject
11. final edit
