1 :: Join the list by invitation
-If you've given your email address to Jane you should receive an email from mavisuallanguage<n>-owner@yahoogroups.com inviting you to join the group. In that email will be a button that says "Join this group!" which you should click on.
-This takes you to a "Request to join" website that describes the group and says that you will need to be approved for membership by Jane (or more likely a TA). Again there is a link here that says "Join the group." (apparently it's not so exciting this time) which you should once again click.
-Assuming you aren't currently signed in to yahoo, this will take you to a page asking you to sign in, or alternately if you don't already have a yahoo user name, to sign up which is free.
-If you need to sign up for a user name, click the "Sign Up" link which takes you to a fairly short form to be filled in. Click "I Agree" once you are done which takes you to a page informing you that a confirmation message has been sent to the email address you've provided. Check your email, and in the new email from yahoo, click "Important! Click here to activate your new account. This will take you ping-ponging back to a website that congratulates you on being able to follow directions. Click "Continue to Yahoo!"
-If you already have a yahoo account, sign in.
-So now you're at the join the group page. If you have multiple email address saved in yahoo, pick which one you want emails from this group sent to. Select whether you want individual emails, a daily digest, only special notices, or no emails at all. (This can be changed later, so I might recommend starting by receiving individual emails and deciding later if you don't like that.) Enter the verification text to prove you are a human being and click "Join" and you are now a member!

2 :: Join the list without being invited
-Ok, so maybe you didn't have an email address ready to give to Jane or maybe some other unforeseen problem came up. You can always send the email address to her or a TA later asking to be invited, but there's another way too. No big deal. With your email address at the ready, send off an email to mavisuallanguage<n>-subscribe@yahoogroups.com where the <n> part should be replaced by the number of your section. So for example if Matt is your TA, send it to mavisuallanguage2-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. The email doesn't need to have anything in the subject line or body, but probably wouldn't hurt anything if it did.
-You'll get an email right back asking you to confirm. Either click on the link or reply to the email. Assuming you clicked the link you'll be taken to a "Request to join" page at which point you can pick up the directions in section 1 above. At the end of them you will probably have to wait for approval before you are made a member of the group; I don't feel like creating yet another fake yahoo account to find out but it should work out just fine.

3 :: The website
-The website for your group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mavisuallanguage<n> where <n> is the number of you section. Along the left side of the page is a navigation bar where you can get to any section of the group. Here you'll be able to read messages, chat, upload files or photos that you might want feedback on, post a link to a website you think might help people, list a date on the calendar or several other things I'll let you explore.

4 :: Send an email to the list
-One of the most important features of the group is that you can send an email to a single address, and it will be received by everyone in the section (assuming they signed up to receive emails). It will also be archived on the website where anyone in the section can read it whether they receive emails or not. (Note that only members of the group, meaning people in your section, can read this online archive. This keeps this group a safe and private place - you don't have to worry about things you say within the group being read by strangers on the web.) You can send messages to the group either from your own email program (software or your computer or web based) or from the group website.
-From the program or website where you normally use your email, simply compose a message to the address mavisuallanguage<n>@yahoogroups.com where <n> is the number of your section (i.e. mavisuallanguage2@yahoogroups.com if your TA is Matt).
-From the website go to the section "Post" which is a subsection of "Messages" in the navigation bar along the left hand side of the page. That will take you to an email form ready to fill out and send off.

5 :: Suggested things to post
-So now your thinking, "great, so here's this group thing for this class and I'm never going to use it - I just want to get my work for the class done as soon as possible so I can go back to watching Strong Bad." But hey man, thinking about it for a second - there are some useful things you can do with this list. Say there's part of an assignment you don't understand. You can ask on the list for clarification or to see how other people are taking it to mean. Or maybe you are working on a piece, it's halfway done, and you want to find someone to take a look and give you a little feedback. Well they could just be an email away. Or maybe you found a website/book/whatever that's really helping you out a lot and you think maybe others could benefit. Maybe even once in awhile you want to post a party or something going on. You know: "come for the underage drinking, stay for the underage puking." But, hey, I'm just a stodgy old TA. I'm sure you can come up with many better ideas.
