Its Worse

We keep getting these messages that the situation is worse than originally
thought. Now the arctic is melting so fast it won’t be there in 2040.  That
means no Artic ice when my grand children are adults.  Was this God’s intention?
I don’t think so.

Listen to these prayers…….
Give us the grace to do your will in all the we undertake.
Give us all a reverence for the Earth as your own creation, that we may use
its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.

And lastly from our baptismal vows… do you renounce the evil powers of this
world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God?
The Candidate responds, “I renounce them”.

How do declared religious people (85% of us claim that we are) leave our
house of worship and drive away in a HUMMER? The connection between our faith and
our behavior needs to be seriously looked at.  Religious people are often
caught in hypocrisies and this may be one of the worst offenses.  We say we love
God; we pray for the Earth, we pray for each other and know that we are called
to serve one another and yet we are destroying one another, destroying God’s
creatures and upsetting the balance of nature that was put into place for our
benefit.  If we continue to behave the way we have this past century, we will
kill ourselves.  This powerful species, ours, is rapidly wiping out other
species.  The Good news is that we have the power to fix problems and we can.
Indeed, we must!

Sally, I am curious how your efforts with the Regeneration Project are exactly the kinds of efforts needed to encourage religious leaders to take on the issues of faith and the environment. Clearly its a slow accrual of information, reminders, experiences and effects that take people from the abstract Knowledge to the lived experience of change. This seems to me to parallel the path to faith…

First we do a presentaion at the congregation, show a film about the science and facts of climate change. Once engaged we provide the resources for them to cut carbon emissions and to help their congregants to do the same. Our various state IPL websites will demonstrate how this is done. We provide sample sermons for clergy, too.
